Our brain uses fear to keep us safe. It is a completely natural feeling. It’s our default setting if you like. What we need to know about fear is that our response to it needs to be very different today than what it used to be. Before, we needed fear and our ‘fight or flight response’ to genuinely keep us safe from predators. Today, we don’t have the same predators but we still go to the same default setting. It is now down to us, to overwrite those settings and know that we CAN do some of the things our brain is telling us not to.
What I mean is, you might take on a new job and go through all the motions of ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I won’t be able to do the job the way they want me to’, ‘people aren’t going to like me’, etc etc. This is your brain wanting to take the easiest route to do absolutely nothing and living the rest of your life like a hermit. We need to be in control of these feelings and be able to override them, and that is down to us. We can choose to feel the worry, but push it aside and move forward anyway, or we can let it control us and stop us from doing what we really want.
Don’t get me wrong, it is ok to feel fear and sometimes it is good for us. Fear will never truly go away, but it’s how we respond to that fear that makes the difference.
Do you want to spend your life living in fear, or can you put enough faith in yourself to step just outside your comfort zone, just past the fear to where the magic really happens??
All my love,
Sus x
